i have banding issues quite often with low key studio portraits with graduated light on the background, with the color or tonal stepping being quite marked, this was on my nikon d3x, i find it much better and almost gone with hasselblad h4d-40 , true 16 bit, 12+ stops of dynamic range and hey presto its gone, most i believe is caused by the smallish d range of dslr , the anti alaising filter and 12/14 bit images..

but only my findings

I recently had a few images rejected from iStockPhoto because of banding. I wasn't aware of it until I looked into it. Now I know what it is and what causes it, I can take steps to prevent it.

A good solution is to re-do the image. Saving a single file multiple times will eventually chip away at the quality and cause banding. If you have the original, straight-from-the-camera show (e.g. the RAW file or even the original JPEG) then use that each time you need to save. Don't save, quit, open the modified file and repeat.

Might also want to look at increasing the resolution or quality on your camera if this is a frequent issue. Other solution is to buy a new camera if you're serious about taking good shots ;)
