New Fringe Focus Portfolio

New Portfolio on Cargo Collective | Fringe Focus

I’ve been producing a lot of work this year, and I came to the realization that I needed a more rapid turnaround on updating my portfolio. Cargo Collective is used by a great number of incredible artists, so I decided to bite the bullet and try it out. I was thoroughly impressed by their functionality, and have just finished replacing my entire portfolio with a new one built upon Cargo.

The new design is my customized version of their SpaceCollective theme. The organization may not be original, but it’s dead simple to update, and even simpler to browse. No doubt you’ve seen it before (James White’s Signal Noise Gallery).

From now on, my personal and professional portfolio will reside at: http://cargocollective.com/fringefocus. Exciting! Because Cargo is sexy is hell.

As designers (and developers) we always have the option of building our own system.
Custom code, or a WordPress theme, we sometimes create a more complicated solution. But if your professional life depends on speed and reliability it’s totally justifiable to move towards a third-party system. This new portfolio means the difference between “Eh, I’ll post it next week” and “Hey, I’ll post it now.”

For those of you with difficult websites or dated portfolios: Try out Cargo Collective, Squarespace, or any other third-party if you feel like you need a change. You could even go further and live entirely off of Flickr, Dribbble, Forrst, etc. to show your work. We no longer have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to showing off our work, there are plenty of new outlets that get the job done. If you still dig doing your own thing, stick to it, it’s all good!

Fringe Focus will remain as my blog & portal for everything, but my permanent gallery has moved to Cargo, that is all.

I hope you dig the new work, let me know what you think in the comments!

Fringe Focus Posters Around the World

Fringe Focus Posters | Mike

Posters Everywhere!

A lot of my time this year has been devoted to my poster series. I’ve had a lot of fun doing illustrations in a ton of styles, and it even led to a Kickstarter project. 94 people gave $4,472 to help bring my ideas from my computer to reality. I bought a ton of poster tubes, got seven of my poster designs printed, and even did some photography prints as well. Organizing and shipping posters across the entire planet for nearly 100 people was incredibly time consuming, demanding, and rewarding.

Now that the dust has settled, I wanted to thank everybody involved, and show a few pictures of where these prints ended up!

Poster Prints Are For Sale!

Poster Print Store Now Open | Fringe Focus

Earlier this year, I ran an exciting and successful Kickstarter project. It was tons of fun, and it resulted in printing a ton of my designs and shipping them all over the world. Thanks to everyone who pitched in!

Now, I have extra prints of various designs, and I’ve made them all for sale in case you’re interested / missed the Kickstarter / want more posters.

ALL prints are limited edition, so once these designs sell out, they won’t be available ever again. This is because it’s more fun for me to design new artworks, and nobody wants a print that’s one of a million copies. Most of the designs consist of 30 prints, Although some are 70, 80, or 100. ‘Eight Balls’ is almost entirely sold out, but there’s a decent stack of the other prints.

Now that the store is up, I can spend more time on new designs. I have a ton of ideas, and I’ll tackle them whenever I start to get some free hours. Could be a while, but the good news is I have enough ideas to last a lifetime / kill me. :/

Here’s a link to the Fringe Focus Poster Store.

Kickstarting My Poster Prints

Kickstarting My Poster Prints - Fringe Focus "Posters. Let's Make Some."

The past couple months, I’ve spent a lot of time designing posters. The overwhelming response from you, the internet, has been that I should print them. I couldn’t agree more, this could be awesome. Let’s do it.

I started a Kickstarter project, so that we can make these prints happen! If you’re not familiar with Kickstarter, it’s essentially a website where creative projects of all shapes and sizes can be funded. There are tons of talented artists, filmmakers, photographers, writers, and musicians raising funds for all types of endeavors. I don’t think there’s any better way to get a project like this started.

Whether or not any of my work gets printed is entirely up to you guys. Readers, followers, friends, colleagues, random strangers that like the color yellow, I’m grateful to anybody that is interested.

Kickstarting My Poster Prints - Five Poster Designs

The Rewards

Oh, I forgot to mention the best part? We all get stuff!

  • Hand-wrriten thank you notes.
  • Thank you in an upcoming special blog post about this project.
  • 6″ signed prints of my photography.
  • 24″ signed posters (FIVE different designs available).
  • 24″ wood-mounted posters.
  • Custom poster design on a subject of your choice.

Every penny helps bring my work closer to being printed, and I can’t thank everybody enough for how awesome you’re being by pitching in your hard earned dollars. I hope these rewards are a sufficient thank you.

Check out my Kickstarter page to grab a poster!

And here’s a video!

One more thing…

We have to raise $2,000 by March 16th (at 6pm), otherwise nothing gets printed at all. That’s the nature of Kickstarter. An all or nothing model that protects artists and fans alike. Don’t worry, you won’t be charged anything unless we hit our goal. There’s no maximum limit though. So my additional proposal is that if we hit $4,000, I will print a sixth poster (the design of which is currently unreleased).

Printing five posters at once, with extra photo prints, shipping tubes, and free shipping anywhere in the US adds up really quickly. Without all of you guys, and the Kickstarter platform, I’d never have this opportunity. So again, thanks so much, rock on!

Announcing the FringeFocus T-Shirt Store!

FringeFocus T-Shirt Store

Good news everyone!

The FringeFocus T-Shirt Store has launched!

I’ve long been a fan of t-shirts as a creative medium. They can be powerful, with beautiful illustrations that encourage activism for a particular cause. They can be exceptionally well designed and find their place in expensive wardrobes. They can even be downright stupid and serve as a sort of napkin for your whole body. I’ve made the latter.

Pirates, Dinosaurs, and Whales oh my!

FringeFocus T-Shirt Store

I actually started making t-shirts years and years ago, we’re talking 2003. Before I lived in Chicago, I sold plenty of funny, ridiculous, and downright stupid t-shirts online. I’ve since abandoned the dozens (perhaps hundreds) of t-shirts I’ve made to focus on web design, posters, and running my business.

Fortunately, I’ve decided to bring back some of my personal favorites to the FringeFocus store. There are eight shirt designs available now for you to take a look at, so feel free to laugh briefly at my bizarre humor. Or buy one and use it to wipe ketchup off of your fingers.

All eight designs are cartoons or illustrations I made myself of things I found personally amusing. I like to make shirts that I’d wear myself, so hopefully you’ll get a kick out of at least a couple of them. If you all like the direction this is headed, perhaps I’ll start drawing up brand new shirts soon!

Check out the FringeFocus T-Shirt Store to see all of the designs!

Let me know what you think of the shirts in the comments!
